Biography

English Ancestry[1]

Johnc Lowthroppe was born abt 1473 and poss. son of a Robert Lowthroppe. John died Cherry Burton, Yorkshire by 1545. The name of his wife is currently Unknown. He is only known to have had one son (Robert), and three daughters (names unknown, mentioned in the will of Robert below).

Robertb Lowthropp was born abt 1511 and died Cherry Burton, Yorkshire between the writing of his will 16 Jul 1558 and its probate 20 Oct 1558. He married Ellen ?Aston (a Richard Aston was named in the wills of both Robert and Ellen) and they had: Thomas (bp 1536), John (bp 1537), Lawrence (bp 1538/9) and Margaret.

Thomasa Lowthropp was bp Cherry Burton, Yorkshire 19 Jun 1536 and buried Etton, Yorkshire 9 Oct 1606. He was married thrice, first Cherry Burton 5 Oct 1560 Elizabeth Clarke, then Etton, Yorkshire 29 Jul 1574 Mary Howell, finally Etton 11 Nov 1588 Jane Carter. By his first wife he had eight children: Katherine (1569), Robert (1561), Audrey (1565 unm.), Elizabeth (1567), Anne (1568), Isabell (1570), Martin (1572-1572) and Andrew (1574). By his second wife he had five more children: Anne (1576), Mary (1578), Thomas (1582), John (1584 see below) and William (1587). By his third wife he had two more children: Lucy (1593) and Mark (1597).

First Generation

(Rev.) John Lothrop was bp at Etton, East Riding of Yorkshire 20 Dec 1584, son of Thomas Lowthropp and Mary Howell. He died Barnstable 8 Nov 1653. As a non-conformist, Rev. John Lothrop was imprisoned by the English government, and while imprisoned, his wife passed away.[2] Rev. John was released from prison with the stipulation he would emigrate to the New World with his family and as many of his congregation as he could take. The family emigrated aboard the Griffin arriving in Boston on 18 Sep 1634.[3] Within days of arrival, Rev. John moved his family to Scituate (in Plymouth Colony, Boston was in Massachusetts Bay Colony) where he set up a new congregation.[4] This Congregation splintered due to religious differences in 1638 and Rev. John petitioned the Plymouth court to create a new congregation on unsettled lands. This petition was granted and in 1639 he went on to found what is now the town of Barnstable.[5]

Johnn married twice, first Eastwell, Kent 16 Oct 1610 Hannah Howse, then Scituate by 1635 Ann ____. By his first wife he had eight children: Thomas (1612/3), Jane (1614), Anne (1616-1617), John (1617/8 unm.), Barbara (1619), Samuel (c1621), Joseph (1624) and Benjamin (1626). By his second wife he had seven more children: Barnabas (1636), inf. dau. (1638-1638), Abigail (1639), Bathsheba/Bathshua (1641), Elizabeth (c1643), John (1645) and an inf son. (1649-1649).

Second Generation

(Rev.) Thomas Lathrop was bp Eastwell, Kent 21 Feb 1612/3 and died Barnstable abt 1707. He married Boston 11 Dec 1639 Sarah Learned and they had five children: Mary Ann (1640), Hannah (1642), Thomas (1644), Melatiah (son, 1646) and Bethia (1649).

Samuel Lothrop (Esq.) was bp Egerton, Kent 23 Feb 1622/3 and died Norwich CT 29 Feb 1699/700. He married twice, first Barnstable 28 Nov 1644 Elizabeth Scudder then Plymouth 1690 Abigail Doane (no ch.) By his first wife he had nine children: John (1645), Elizabeth (1648), Samuel (1650), Sarah (1655), Martha (1657), Israel (1659), Joseph (1661), Abigail (1665) and Anne (1667)

Benjamin Lothrop was bp Eastwell, Kent 11 Apr 1624 and died Charlestown 3 Jul 1691. He married 1660 Martha ____ and they had nine children: Martha (1652), Hannah (1655), Benjamin (1660), Mary (1661/2), Sarah (1664), Elizabeth (c1665), Rebecca (1666), Mercy (1670) and John (1672).

Joseph Lothrop was bp Eastwell, Kent 11 Apr 1624 and died Barnstable bef 9 Apr 1702. He married Barnstable 11 Dec 1650 Mary Ansell and they had twelve children: infant (1651-1651), Joseph (1652), Mary (1654), Benjamin (1657), Elizabeth (1659), John (1661-1663), Samuel (1663), John (1666), Barnabas (1668), Hopestill (dau 1671), Thomas (1673/4) and Hannah (1675).

Barnabas Lothrop (Esq.) was born Scituate 6 Jun 1636 and died Barnstable 26 Dec 1715. He married twice, first Barnstable 1 Dec 1658 Susanna Clarke then Boston 15 Nov 1698 Abigail Button (no ch.) By his first wife he had fourteen children: John (1659 d.y.), Abigail (1660), Barnabas (1662), Susanna (1664), John (1667), Nathaniel (1669), Bathshua (1671), Anna (1673), Thomas (1675-1675), Mercy (1676-1677), Sarah (c1678), Thankful (1679), James (1684) and Samuel (1685).

John Lothrop (II) was born Barnstable abt 9 Feb 1644/5 and bp there 18 May 1645. He died there 27 Sep 1727. He married twice, first Plymouth 3 Jan 1672 Mary Cole then Barnstable 9 Dec 1695 Hannah Morton. By his first wife he had: John (1673), Mary (1675), Martha (1677), Elizabeth (1679), James (1681), Hannah (1682/3), Jonathan (1684), Barnabas (1686), Abigail (1689), Experience (1691). By his second wife he had three more children: Bathsheba (1696), Phoebe (1701) and Benjamin (c1704).
